The GP Unique
It's difficult to find a more stylish hatchback than the GP Unique. It has big intakes, arch extension and a two part rear wing. These are features normally reserved for French unicorns.
It's a good thing that it doesn't just appear sloppy. It also is incredibly responsive. The engine is smooth, powerful, and its 332lb-ft of torque is delivered with ease below 1,750rpm. It's also well matched to the quick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. It's a shame that the GP Unique doesn't have a manual option however Mini is clear about its primary focus on lap times, and an automatic is the best option here.
There are some flaws. For instance, the GP Unique's passive damping is firm but uninvolving. When you're driving straight and smooth B road, you can easily push the chassis's dynamic limits however, it's a challenge to stay fluid with your inputs. The front end can become a little snatchy and the car slams when under the strain of irregular British bumps.
When you dial in the GP Unique, its handling is superb. Its front end and body control remind us of the JCW racecar we drove last season. On a slick surface and when you're in a spirited mood, it's a true pleasure to drive.
The car's chassis also feels distinct from the standard MT-09, thanks to the fact it has more torsional stiffness and bigger axles. The new GP features 24.7 degrees of rake and 108mm of trail, which is a lot more on the nose than the R6's but it also translates into incredible stability in corners.
Another fantastic feature of GP is the PO Generator module. These were very easy to spot, but they did not annoy viewers and did not affect the viewing experience.
The sound quality is also impressive, and the GP500 has an onboard independent DSP chip that includes the treVolo psychoacoustic tuning system which creates 3D audio effects. It uses an internal quad-speaker layout, which is located in each corner of the cabinet.
